Success for All (SFA)
SFA is the program that is used at DAAS K-5 to teach students to read. It is a program that includes phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Click here to visit their website and learn more. One of the most important parts of the program is that the students are placed into a reading group based on their reading level. This ensures that the students are receiving instruction that is perfect for them (not too hard or too easy). Your child may have an SFA teacher that is not their home room teacher. If you have any questions about how your child is doing in their SFA class, you can contact their SFA teacher. However, your child's home room teacher can answer any questions about the program that you may have.
Another important part of the program is the at home portion. Each night your child should be bringing home their current book. Please spend about 15-20 minutes with your child reading, sign the attached Read and Respond sheet, and return it back to school. After the class moves to the next lesson the book can stay at home for re-reading practice. Re-reading is a practice that improves students fluency and word recognition skills.
This website is also available to learn more about the lessons that your child is working on in SFA. There are short videos that go with each lesson to supplement learning. They can be accessed for free on any computer. https://vimeo.com/channels/rrhomelink

Third Grade Reading Law
Many of you may have heard about a new reading law that is going to start taking effect in Michigan. You can visit the state website here to learn more about the new law. Because this new law will affect our students in the next few years we are starting to put in place practices such as reading tutors, after school tutoring, and small group interventions to help with students reading below grade level. If you have any questions about the new law or what DAAS is doing to help your child be successful you can contact your child's teacher or an administrator.
